broadcasting to both valleys at once
Broadcasting: 27/11/10 - 05/12/10
Thanks to everyone for a lovely winter broadcast, first from Slaithwaite for the Christmas lights switch-on and then from Honley Scout Hut.
Over a thousand people tuned in to listen live over the four days of the broadcast (2nd-5th December). We have uploaded all the programmes so that you can listen again whenever you want to. Just click on whichever programme you want to listen to in the feature panel.
A full schedule is below…
——————————————————–
Thursday 2nd December 4.00pm – 9.30pm
4.00 – 5.30pm School’s Out
Hosted by a team of young people from all over the Two Valleys, tonight’s programme features an interview with Jan Wallis, the new Chair of Honley High School’s Governors and Ruby, Meg and Rachel follow their school caretaker around for a day. Mikey and Rick Gee will be playing live in the studio and music, and we’ll have someone from Cafe 100 in Holmfirth popping in to tell us all about what is going on there. And of course, schools out wouldn’t be the same without plenty of music, factiods an the obligatory bad Christmas jokes.
7.00 – 8.30pm Music Matters
Frances presents a round up of music, events and issues that matter in the Valleys and beyond. With a live session from the St Mary’s Handchime Group.
——————————————————–
Friday 3rd December 12.15pm – 8.30pm
12.15 – 1.00pm Thoughts from Roundway
Since September a group of older people have been meeting every Friday morning at Roundway in Honley. Officially they get together to sing, in a choir led by Hoot Music, but it seems there’s a healthy dose of cuppas, cake and chat as well. They’ll be dropping into the studio to share some music and their thoughts on what it means to get older in the Valleys.
1.00 – 3.00pm Schools in Space
We’ve been out and about, working with Honley Junior School, Holmfirth High School, Honley High School and Colne Valley Specialist Arts College. Taking the Universe as our theme, we’ve been thinking, composing and writing; wondering about this huge subject (how do we think about infinity?) and coming right down to explore our own personal universes. There’ll be radio drama, monologues, poetry, original music and a report on our visit to Huddersfield Observatory.
4.00 – 6.30pm Schools Out
As well as music, jokes and factoids, the team will be interviewing the in-coming Headteacher at Honley High, Chris Sylge about what he plans for the future of the school. There will be live music from young songstress Lila Lou and Eugene catches up with Tom about his love of Parkour (otherwise known as Free Running). We’re hoping that our MP for the Valleys, Jason McCartney will come and pay us a visit before he goes to switch on the Christmas Lights, and the Schools Out team are planning a rigorous interview for him, including questions about the future of Higher Education with the announcement of the steep increase in university fees.
6.30 – 7.00pm Let the Festivities Commence
We’ll be previewing all the events happening in and around Honley on Saturday and sending out our roving reporters to do a live link from the big Christmas Lights Switch on at 7.00pm.
7.00pm – 8.30pm Be Very Prepared
Indoors in the cosy Scout Hut, with the Scouts, the Universe quiz will be back..but the questions will be harder. And we’ll be talking to some of the Scout Leaders about their recent trip to Nepal, where they were helping to build a village school. Dom Kelly is in the studio, performing live, to round the evening off.
——————————————————–
Saturday 4th December 10am – 4pm
We’ll be broadcasting from the Caravan of Love – where it’s toasty and warm, whatever the weather outside. We’ll be bringing you all the best from the Honley Christmas celebrations, which includes St Mary’s Christmas Street Market, Trinity Church’s Christmas Tree Festival, Honley Village Trust’s Art Fair and live music in Taylors and St Marys Church.
——————————————————–
Sunday 5th December 2.00pm – 7.00pm
2.00 – 3.00pm TVR Presents….
The afternoon starts with a live set from Swing of Things, who promise “Beautiful Music….Dangerous Rhythms…Continental Swing” including songs, ballads, dances and instrumentals from the ‘30s through to the ‘60s, with a list of characters including Harry Lime, Minnie the Moocher, Jerry the Junker, Mrs Murphy, the Peanut Vendor and Top Cat. Following Swing of Things, we bring you our very own Christmas Panto (with a Universe theme, naturally). Written by Frances and starring our own TVR team, Gizmo Goes to Mars will be the perfect accompaniment to your after-lunch mince pie and coffee.
3.00pm – 4.00pm Art to Art
In our unbroken chain of discussions, its the time for sculptor Mick Kirkby-Geddes to swap roles and turn interviewer. Mick will be interviewing musician and performer Andy Burton (aka Andy Stamps) of the Satellites about Art in the Valleys, and much, much more…
4.00 – 7.00pm Community Round Up
So what have Two Valleys Radio been up to in the last few months and what’s happening in the months to come….
We’ll be talking about the village Pantos (oh no, we won’t!) and Lisa Kendall who is directing Holmfirth Drama Group’s Panto will be in the studio. Leah and Clive will be talking about their feature on Eid, and how it was to meet the Imam inside Thorton Lodge Mosque earlier in November. Colne Valley Museum have just celebrated their 40th year, and Taru and Caroline were there to help them (and eat birthday cake). We’ll be catching up with Gill about what’s planned for Slaithwaite’s Moonraking Festival and finding out what happened when the Hey Green Signs went up in Meltham. In July we spoke to Alex Bray about Brass Factor and in November his dream became reality when he packed out Holmfirth Picturedrome for the Brass Factor competition. We were there and we know who won…here’s a hint…Hade Edge Brass Band will be playing live in the studio. Finishing off the whole weekend and playing us out will be The Valley Flutes, who say that they’re the coolest hardcore flute group in the Holme Valley!
Leave us your email address and we’ll remember you next time you visit.

Do you think there is anti-islam feeling in the two valleys. You don't hear about it - but I wonder what the people in the studio think?
adrian - ages ago 5th December 2010, 4:23pm
Jason McCartney said on his interview on Two Valleys Radio on Friday that he hadn't decided which way to vote on the Student Fees issue. Do you think he really has a choice - or will he be whipped!!!!

...The translation is about the tico-tico eating cornmeal, but the English lyrics do refer to a clock ticking.
Jakob - ages ago 5th December 2010, 2:46pm
Tico-tico IS a kind of sparrow. The song was origionally called "Tico-Tico no Farelo" which means "tico-tico on the cornmeal".

linda - ages ago 3rd December 2010, 7:03pm
I want to know what MP thinks about Arts funding - does he realise that the majority of funding is for projects just like Two Valleys Radio? The tories seem to have slashed funding and Jeremy Hunt seemed too eager to give up massive cuts so that he could further his career and get in the 'star cabinet'!!
Head Tractor - ages ago 3rd December 2010, 6:54pm
Any questions for your MP? Jot them down here on the website and we'll put them to him.
peter Spafford - ages ago 3rd December 2010, 6:36pm
Enjoying the discussion. Great and gristly variety of material as usual. Winter wonderland indeed.

I'm a parent at Honley. I think the school needs to interact more with it's community. Does the new Head agree?
adrian - ages ago 3rd December 2010, 5:06pm
We've got the Valleys MP on the broadcast later this evening; how does Chris feel about the new Government's education policies
Linda - ages ago 3rd December 2010, 5:02pm
Is the new Head Teacher keen to get into Honley to improve it's rating in the league tables, or is his interest wider than this?
HeadTractor - ages ago 3rd December 2010, 5:02pm
